A rare tumor of the popliteal fessa
A 15-year-old male patient presented with a painful mass in the left popliteal region. Magnetic resonance imaging was suggestive of a synovialsarcoma. The mass was surgically removed. Histopathologic examination showed a granulomatous inflammatory process without signs of malignancy. As the medical history revealed recent contact with kittens, and as scratch lesions were found at physical exam of the lower legs, cat scratch disease was suspected. This diagnosis was confirmed by serology for Bartonella henselae and by Warthin-Starry staining and PCR on the histopathologic specimen. No other infectionsites were found. A treatment with oral azithromycin was administered. The ensuing clinical evolution was favourable.
