Influenza infection is a common disease which causes severe morbidity and mortality among the elderly. Additionally to the burden of illness, financial consequences for both the patients and the society are particularly high.
Nevertheless, vaccine uptake in Belgium remains too low even if the tendency is increasing as time goes by. In addition, medical staff should be vaccinated for their potential role in the transmission of the disease to weak patients in hospital. This should be stipulated in the Belgian recommendations.
Finally, new approaches for the control and the management of influenza will be needed in future recommendations.
