Rivalry and competition in the 17th century
Not only scientific curiosity, but also competition motivated investigators of the Dutch universities.
Between the 17th century physicians Van Horne, De Graaf and Swammerdam existed a great rivalry and competition struggle to establish, who was the first among them to discover the ovum in the female ovary.
Finally the Royal Society in Londen rendered a wise judgement in this controversy after which all concerned persons could feel satisfied.
