Abstract :

Pica resulting in lead intoxication
The history of a 10-year-old girl is reported. She suffered from an eating disorder, known as pica. Due to this disturbed eating behaviour, she presented with a severe ferriprival anemia and high levels of blood lead. Pica is an eating disorder defined as the persistent eating of non-nutritive substances for a period of at least 1 month at an age in which this behaviour is developmentally inappropriate. The etiology of pica is unknown. Pica behavior may result in important complications of which lead intoxication is one of the most important. A brief review is given of the sources of lead, the symptoms of lead intoxication as well as of its prevention and therapy.
