Desmopressin associated symptomatic hyponatremic hypervolemia in children, a complication to remember
Enuresis nocturna is regularly treated by nasal desmopressin, an antidiuretic hormone. It can provoke severe electrolyte imbalance with hyponatremic encephalopathy.
We report a child exhibiting these side effects, having taken therapeutic doses (2 x 10 mg/d intranasal). Still an excessive fluid intake at night was noted, which had led to a dilutional hyponatremia.
Prescribing desmopressin, it is of paramount importance to provide correct information to the child and its parents. If warning symptoms, such as headache, vomiting and altered consciousness appear, parents should immediately seek medical care.
