Ingestion of a fine needle: unexpected course
A 14-year-old girl presents to the emergency department with the complaint of having “ingested” a fine needle. Standard radiographs of the neck and the abdomen could not reveal the foreign body. A standard radiograph of the chest revealed a radiopaque linear structure, projecting in the paravertebral area in the left lung. Unfortunately, removal of the foreign body by means of a rigid bronchoscopy was unsuccessful. The needle was surgically removed via a thoracotomy. The procedure and the further follow-up were uneventful.
