Gallbladder carcinoma as a complication of primary sclerosing cholangitis and ulcerative colitis
A 45-year-old man with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and colitis ulcerosa (CU) in need of a liver transplantation was diagnosed
with a gallbladder mass on a preoperative screening ultrasound. The further investigation with an MRI and a surgical resection revealed a gallbladder carcinoma.
PSC and CU are known risk factors for developing hepatobiliary and extrahepatic malignancies, like gallbladder tumors. Since the clinical symptoms are not specific and the diagnosis is most often made in a progressive, non-curative stage, a strict follow-up of this patient group is important.
