Severe fatigue, weight loss and headaches: search for common cause
A 74-year-old patient presented with severe fatigue, weight loss and increasing headaches. The initial diagnostic investigations could not find the cause of his problems. An additional fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT scan visualized a vasculitis of the large- and medium-sized arteries. Further examinations confirmed the diagnosis of giant-cell arteritis.
Giant-cell arteritis (temporal arteritis) is a disease with an unknown etiology mainly affecting the aorta and its extracranial branches. The diagnosis is based upon a clinical and biochemical examination and a biopsy of the a. temporalis. The FDG PET scan undoubtedly has an added value in the diagnostic approach of patients with an atypical presentation of giant-cell arteritis.
